Grasslands National Park - West Block

Prairie dogs are considered a 'keystone' species because their colonies create islands of habitat that benefit approximately 150 other species.   Their burrows are used by other creatures such as ferrets and foxes and burrowing owls.  They help aerate and fertilize the soil, allowing a greater diversity of plants to also thrive.

Plains Bison - Grasslands NP-West Block , SK, 2021
Reintroduced in 2005 after a 120 year absence.   Prior to European settlement, the prairies were home to tens of millions of free-roaming bison.  By the end of the 1880s the large herds were driven to the brink of extinction by over hunting.
Cape Buffalo and Water Buffalo come from Africa and Asia - the creatures in North America are Bison.                               Related but different.
